One of Vermont's premier wild trout streams, a tributary of the Winooski known for its brown trout, including trophy-sized fish downstream of Northfield. The lower eight miles are managed under strict no-kill, artificials-only rules. Easy wading water with steady aquatic-insect hatches; upper reaches hold a mixed bag of brook, rainbow and brown trout.

🥾 Public access: Special-regulation water from the Junction Road bridge (Berlin/Montpelier) upstream to the top of Northfield Falls Dam in Northfield: all trout catch-and-release, artificial flies and lures only (anglers 14 and under may use bait), open 2nd Saturday in April to Oct 31, closed to all fishing Nov 1 to the Friday before the 2nd Saturday in April. Public access at the Dog River 'Jacuzzi' Natural Area in Berlin and roadside pull-offs along VT Route 12 and Route 12A, which follow the river.
